Hello from the other side (of Week 2)
So I've fallen off the blogging wagon. This honestly is probably not a surprise to anyone. Things got a little busy last week. We started hitting our stride this second week of coworking/homeschooling. I thought Thursday was Wednesday the whole day, and then Friday came around and it was amazing. Best surprise ever. But seriously, there isn't that much to look forward to on the weekend other than we are not expected to be working or "on" and no school curriculum. It's not like anything changes much for us weekday vs weekend these days.
The Weekend
We decided the weekend before that it would just be good to drive around. We literally didn't even get out of the car this time. We went west to Niles to check out their version of the Leaning Tower. We also had a proper Sunday dinner. Roasted chicken, brussels sprouts, and lemon smashed roasted potatoes.
We resurrected an old puzzle that was a Galena Fail. It was too hard to complete during a couple days in Galena years ago, and we somehow transported it with chunks still somewhat complete. The easy stuff is done. There's just a lot of plain black or gray pieces with no identifiers. We'll see how long it will take us to complete it.
Monday
Monday had brought snow. Was that Monday? What day was it? Man, I never know anymore. I used to know what day of the week it was based on what meetings I had, and which campus I needed to be at on specific days. Now I have a Webex meeting every single weekday at 9am, a few random meetings in the afternoons, and the days just blur together. I digress. Here's a picture of Bennett playing in the rapidly melting snow. Just a couple hours after this, it was all gone.Monday also brought on Bennett's Zoom meeting with the first grade. It was hilarious and also a great way to have some interaction with the teachers. It is a jumble and super noisy before they mute all the kids, but so much fun. They also do an activity that promotes movement, with the entire class and the three first grade teachers also jumping around and having fun.
Tuesday
More curriculum, walkie talkie fun with friends, and a little bit of sunshine, but still cold. The picture on the right is Bennett with his number grid. I'm not sure that Brad and I fully understand the assignment, but he was into it, and Ms. Shah seemed to like it when we posted it for his assignment that day on Google Classroom.Wednesday
Wednesday was the day we were waiting for: sun AND warmer temperatures. (And it also brought about people gathering in groups, and Chicago's Mayor got MAD.)We went for a walk and ran into so many neighbors- we chatted, but of course we maintained our distances. We ran into Bennett's pal, Freya, and her parents loaned us their copy of Harry Potter #6. I was just about to order this online. Why didn't we go to the library before it closed?! Next time there's a quarantine and everyone is rushing to hoard TP, I'm going to go to the library to hoard books for my son. Well, hopefully there won't be a next time. The book exchange was hilarious- Mike, Freya's Dad (and also my high school classmate, and also fellow NU staff, in what became the smallest of worlds), grabbed the book using a plastic bag, carried the bag using a disinfectant wipe, dropped it on the sidewalk 6' from me, and we picked it up when he was at a far enough distance. Being neighborly, while social distancing. It was just good to see them.
With the wonderful weather, our neighbors also decided on doing a social distancing happy hour. There was music and gathering not any less than 6 feet apart, and it was nice to enjoy the day. Bennett was a little bummed at how unpartylike it was- I think he had built it up way more in his head. Anyway, look at these cuties.
Thursday
I also attempted to make Filipino siopao. That was so much fun to make, but we have such a little steamer. I was tempted to drive over to my mom's to steal their giant steamer. Mom- don't give that away! I need it! Also, here's a shot of Bennett, that could have really been any day of the week.Friday
I also made some Venezuelan Papusas. Also so much fun to make. I think I've hit the level of quarantine that requires that I make ethnic pouch-like delicacies. I think the first phase of quarantine is quick breads, and I made banana bread what seems like 3 weeks ago. We also had salads, in case people think we only eat meats and cheese filled carbs.
Saturday came with more surprises. I'll post on that separately. Hope everyone is hanging in there. Don't forget to wash your hands, and don't lick anything!
xo,
Michelle
